Job Position: Manager – SHES (Africa North)

About The Role

We are searching for Orica’s next Manager – SHES (Africa North), to be based in Ghana, Accra. This pivotal role is instrumental in shaping the future of our workplace health and safety standards, major incident risk management, industry standard, environmental sustainability, and stakeholder engagement.

As the SHES Manager, you will lead a dedicated and diverse team in maintaining Orica’s high standards in SHES (Safety, Health, Environment, and Security) practices, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for our office and site based operations.

What you will be doing

  • Manage Africa North based SHES team to delivery & align all behaviours with Orica’s Charter Values, Purpose and Strategy
  • Collaborate with ISPE and Regional SHES to align with the Group SHES strategy and local regulations;
  • Develop, provide and continuously improve SH&E KPIs for line management and SH&E support team to identify areas of focus and deliverables;
  • Assure site compliance with regulatory requirements and nominated industry standards, which collectively form the site’s licence to operate;
  • Provide strategic direction for SHES across the responsible area’s/ locations;
  • Drive SHES accountability across business Leadership teams by establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Ensure effective and consistent implementation of SHES improvement initiatives;
  • Identify, evaluate and implement SHES programs across the sub regional area;
  • Support major projects by leading / facilitating hazard studies, as appropriate;
  • Identify SHES training needs and deliver selected SHES Training Programs;
  • Measure and report SHES performance;
  • Engage with industry associations on SHES matters;
  • Lead SHES investigations for significant events;
  • Ensure rigorous incident reporting and investigation systems and processes are implemented, identifying direct and root causes, and support identification and tracking of corrective actions that address root causes;
  • Ensure readiness of an emergency response team for scenarios up to and including Enterprise Level Risk events, ensure business continuity planning is maintained, and coordinate with the Corporate Crisis Management Teams;
  • Ensure that security infrastructure and personnel are in place and effective;
  • Ensure that health management programs are in place and effective;
  • Effective oversight of environmental and sustainability matters;
  • Manage and report the SHES function budget;

What you will bring

  • Minimum 10- 15 years experience, ideally in the mining, oil & gas/ engineering industries
  • Minimum 10 years experience as a SHES Specialist or 3-5 years in a Managerial position
  • Expert knowledge in incident investigation and root cause analysis
  • Demonstrated depth of knowledge in Swedish safety & health regulatory frameworks and good relationships with regulatory authorities
  • Sound knowledge in risk management and systems with further developed subject matter in Safety, Health, Process Safety and Auditing/Assurance
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, including prioritization, planning, task delegation, and coordination across multiple teams including a proven ability to communicate and drive engagement
  • Knowledge of the explosives industry would be highly regarded
  • International experience would be highly regarded.
  • Experience in training people would be highly regarded

Your Qualifications

  • Relevant Degree/ Diploma qualification in Safety, Health, Engineering or Science
  • Qualification in environmental management would be well-regarded
  • Certification with SHES regulatory and audit bodies.
